Pyrolave brings Volvic lava stone up to speed with design

Decorators and kitchen specialists are aware of the technical and aesthetic qualities of Volvic lava stone. For twenty years, Pyrolave has been producing kitchen counters made from enameled lava stone, and even decorative panels like the ones created for the Dubai airport. But the small to mid-sized business Castelsarrasin, founded by Claude Roualdes and Christian Conquand, is looking to reorient its activities.

“Our world has naturally centered on interior decoration, and we want to radically renew the overly rustic image of lava stone by developing more design-type products,” explains Yves Veretout, head of sales and marketing. The result: an elegant collection of ultra-resistant indoor-outdoor tables and chairs designed by Studio Denali designers and the striking Nomad Cook. “This has nothing to do with a traditional barbecue. It is a new mobile cooking tool, where heat passes through the lava stone by induction. No more charcoal fumes or grime.” The business, which currently has a patent for this highly innovative cooking method, aims to appeal to the high-end market with its exceptional products. “It will never be mass-market, since Volvic lava stone is a rare material, which is extracted by hand in our quarries,” justifies Yves Veretout.
