Successful Launch of New Leather Goods Fair GLS

Success in terms of visitors: Around one quarter of the 31,500 GDS visitors attended the GLS premiere. Buyers from 35 different nations used the international leather goods range at GLS. Exhibitors conclude: Increased synergy effects at GLS and GDS were confirmed and the quality of visitors and contacts initiated with new customers were highly rated. Over 61% of all exhibitors already now confirm their participation at the Autumn GLS.

Creative design forum affirmed: In extraordinary stage-like surroundings 12 young creative international designers posted their first trade fair successes in the "GLS-Bagstage” section.
Trend highlights at a glance: The trend area ensured insights into the latest product developments in young stylish collections and presented the most outstanding pieces in Hall 7a.
Leather goods in focus: Joint trend shows under the "top to toe” banner proved ideal vehicles for conveying the total outfit idea. Here international buyers were able to gain comprehensive orientation and inspiration for their orders.
Of the 31,500 visitors to GDS about 25% came to the premiere of GLS - International Event for Leather Goods & More from 35 nations. GLS in Düsseldorf ran concurrently with GDS - The Premier Shoe Event - and presented the trade audience with a first-class, international range of leather goods from all segments. Commenting on the event Armin Stader, Project Head at GLS, said: "We are satisfied with the GLS premiere which posted a solid result. The synergy effects the new GDS - GLS power pack set out to generate have been achieved. Even during the fair renowned exhibitors, international visitor delegations as well as members from manufacturers' and retailers' associations announced their participation at the next GLS."
GLS: Platform for New Customer Contacts
161 international exhibitors and collections of established brands from 16 nations as well as creative young designers showcased their ranges here. These included 90% first-time exhibitors not featured over the past few years in the leather goods segment at GDS. The synergy effects generated were welcomed by both exhibitors and visitors alike. The large majority of exhibitors were satisfied with the number of new customers they were able to enlist and confirmed GLS as a key basis for canvassing new customers.
Commenting on this Joachim Vogt, Owner and Managing Director of Vogt of Florence said: "We were satisfied both with the start of the GLS premiere and the way it went overall and we were able to conclude some good deals. We welcome this new GLS platform with its leather goods range running concurrently with GDS and we are extremely satisfied with the high number and good quality of visitors at our stand. We welcomed international visitors, amongst others from Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland including buyers from shoe and leather goods stores as well as interior design stores. In addition to our regular customers, we were able to forge very many new contacts, 80% of whom we were immediately able to enlist as new customers. We appreciate the service and the organisation provided by Messe Düsseldorf and will definitely be on board at the next GLS.” 80% of the GLS trade audience were decision-makers from upper and middle management coming from over 15 different business sectors. After buyers from the shoe retail trade, representatives from the leather goods retail trade accounted for the second largest group of visitors (17.6%).
The high proportion of international visitors (standing at a total of 41%) was seen in a positive light. Generating particular interest were bags, small leather goods and belts, closely followed by luggage and travel accessories. Leisure and sports bags as well as gloves were also in demand.
GLS-Bagstage: Young Designers forge Sectoral Links
The GLS-Bagstage segment, the forum for young, creative design, showcased fresh ideas and new sources of inspiration. International, not yet established, up-and-coming designers presented their creative collection items here in a special stage-like setting. The atmosphere here really struck a nerve featuring hip and trendy bag creations in unusual materials like used plastic, woven tape measures, old newspapers, precious python leather, heat-sealed flowers or imitation animal skins coated in plastic as well as original one-offs. Visitors to GLS-Bagstage especially praised the high degree of creativity displayed by all GLS-Bagstage exhibitors. These for instance included Olivia Oestreich from Cologne, the Dutch Delight agency from Holland and the Apfelsina label from Berlin in addition to the Uwe Deinert agency (momaboma) from Italy. Owner of the agency Dutch Delight and exhibitor in the GLS-Bagstage segment, Jeftha de Vries, was also satisfied: "The GLS premiere and participation in the GLS- Bagstage event were great successes for us. We are very satisfied. We made quality contacts and were able to enlist new customers like Prange and Brecklinghaus. We will definitely be back again at the next GLS."
Trend Shows point the Way ahead
In focus at the joint fashion and trend shows in the Show Centre in Hall 5 was the total outfit idea. Leather goods were incorporated into both the GDS Fashion Show and the Young Power Show.
The Trends for Next Winter
The colour brown, especially dark brown, will be an absolutely key theme in the 06/07 Autumn/Winter season. Though interestingly translated black nuances will also be in great demand. The trend is moving generally towards dark, muted tones and is now focusing more heavily on an unusual, tactile feel for bag styles. Whether oiled, greased, crushed, brushed or featuring a vintage finish, surface properties play a key role here. Fur variations are also indispensable in the coming season. Crocodile skin embossing is as in demand as ever. Metallic elements create additional accents and add that special depth of detail. Shapes focus on voluminous, oblong styles, 60s style classics like Kelly bags as well as soft, pouch-type bags. Short-handled handbags are also very much in evidence. Soft shells are still around and are now also being complemented by more rigid ones. Matt gold fasteners, rings or chain handles are highlights for all trendsetters. The folklore look continues in the decorative segment.
