Thom Mayne guest of honour at Cersaie 2006

Californian architect Thom Mayne, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize 2005, will be the guest of honour on Thursday 28 September 2006 in the Bologna exhibition centre’s Palazzo dei Congressi at Cersaie, the 24th International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings.

At 6.00 in the afternoon, architect Thom Mayne will be presented with the Seal of the ISA (Advanced Studies Institute) of the University of Bologna.
The initiative, created by the Commerce, Tourism and Urban Marketing Office of the Municipality of Bologna and the ISA (Advanced Studies Institute), promoted by Assopiastrelle (Italian association of ceramic tile and refractory materials manufacturers), the Municipality of Bologna, BolognaFiere and the University of Bologna and organised by Edi.Cer. spa during Cersaie 2006, will be part of the “Architecture Day”, one of the most important cultural events to be held at this 24th edition of the show. The meeting will see the participation of the Mayor of Bologna Sergio Cofferati, Assopiastrelle Chairman Alfonso Panzani, and BolognaFiere Managing Director Michele Porcelli.
Thom Mayne, co-founder of the Santa Monica-based firm Morphosis and SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2005, a kind of “Nobel Prize for architecture”, as the highest recognition for a thirty-year career that has brought him 54 AIA Awards and 25 Progressive Architecture Awards. He has taught at Columbia University, Harvard University, the University of Yale, the Berlage Institut in Holland and the Barlett School of Architecture in London. He now teaches at the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture.
Mayne’s work represents an original, experimental form of architecture that reflects the uniqueness of Californian culture with its open vision and lack of preconceptions. 
Two of his most prestigious projects are the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters and the Science Center School in Los Angeles. He has also designed the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, the US Federal Office building in San Francisco and the NOAA Satellite Operation Control Facility in Maryland. He has been selected to design for the Olympic village for the 2012 Olympic Games and the New Academic Building for the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Arts, both in New York. He has also carried out projects in Austria, Spain, Taiwan and South Korea.
